Q. Does my adoption, gift in-kind donation, or merchandise purchase count toward Member Day?

A. No. You must make a general membership donation of $50 or more per person to be eligible to register for Member Day.

Q. I’m a member, but my friend is not? Do they have to be a member to attend?

A. Yes.  Each guest needs to become a member and register to reserve a spot on a Member Day tour.

Q. Can I register for more than one tour?

A. Membership entitles you to register for one tour on one of our Member Day events. Members are welcome to attend both Member Days events, however, registration, and therefore an additional fee, is required  to attend the second event.

Q. I need to cancel my Member Day tour. Can I have a refund?

A. Because your donation was to become a “member” of Save the Chimps, your donation is non-refundable. Registering for Member Day is one of the benefits of becoming a member of Save the Chimps.



Q. How long does the tour last?

A. The tour takes 60 -90 minutes.  Walking tours typically take slightly longer than trolley tours, and weather may affect the pace of the tour.

Q. How far is the walk?

A. The distance of the tour is approximately 1.25 miles on a sandy, unpaved road, with some portions on grass and uneven ground.

Q. Is the trolley tour different than the walking tour?

A. Both trolley and walking  tours are identical in terms of  stops, sights, and the information you will receive. Trolley tours are offered and recommended for people who are unable to walk the 1.25 mile distance.

Q. How close will we get to the chimps?

A. There will be no physical contact of any kind with the chimpanzees. One tour stop will bring guests within approximately 12 feet of the chimpanzees, who will be protected from any contact with the public by a steel mesh barrier. The remainder of the tour is confined to the roadway around the sanctuary, which only permits distance viewing of the chimpanzees. Binoculars and cameras are recommended.

Q. Can I touch a chimp?

A. No. There will be no direct contact with the chimpanzees. Chimpanzees are estimated to be 4-7 times stronger than an adult human.

Q. Can I feed a chimp?

A. No. Only qualified and trained staff are permitted to feed chimpanzees.

Q. Can I see a specific chimpanzee while I’m there (e.g. chimpanzee I adopted)?

A. The chimpanzees live on three-acre islands that are connected to a chimpanzee building where they come in for feeding and shelter. The chimps are free to roam as they please. Given the space and freedom they have, we cannot guarantee that you will see a particular chimpanzee.

Q. Will we be able to see the chimps being fed?

A. The majority of the tours take place outside of the chimpanzees’ regular meal times, and we do not do “public feedings” of the chimps. You may catch a glimpse of a caregiver serving the chimpanzees lunch between 11:30 am and 12:30 pm if you happen to be on a tour at this time. However, it is most likely that you will not see the chimpanzees being given their meals.



Q. What if it rains?

A. Member Day is a rain or shine event so we highly recommend bringing umbrellas and rain gear.   We have had rainy Member Days in the past and they have proven to be a fun event with plenty of chimpanzee sightings.

Q. What time can I show up? / How early can I arrive?

A. The Sanctuary was not designed to accommodate the public, therefore parking is limited at Save the Chimps. Please arrive no sooner than 30 minutes before your scheduled tour time.

Q. Can we stay on property after the tour is over?

A. Once the tour is over, we encourage you to browse our merchandise, enrichment, and volunteer sign-up stations.  However, because parking is limited we do request that you depart within 30 minutes after the end of your tour. Thank you for your understanding.

Q. Can we bring items for the chimpanzees?

A. Yes! We will be accepting items the chimps need and love and are very grateful for your generosity! As a bonus, each person who brings a Wishlist item(s), will entered into a “All Things Chimp” raffle. For our full Wish List click here.

Q. What should I bring?

A. Items we recommend you bring include your camera, drinking water, hats, sunglasses, umbrellas, rain jackets, and binoculars. Please note that you will have to carry what you bring. We also recommend you wear sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes.

Q. Can I bring a stroller

A. Yes.  Strollers are allowed, however,  we recommend an all-terrain or jogging stroller due to the uneven, unpaved roadway the tours take place on.

Q. Can we bring a wheelchair?

A. Yes. Please note that the sanctuary road is an unpaved dirt road.

Q. Can I bring my pet?

A. No.  Pets are not allowed on property, with the exception of service dogs, as recognized by Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations.

Q. Can I purchase merchandise at the event?

A. There will be plenty of merchandise for sale – all things chimp of course!  Items include t-shirts, baseball caps, vanity plates, books, bumper stickers, and original chimp art – a favorite!

Q. Will there be food available?

A. There will not be food available at the event. Food cannot be consumed while on the tour.

Q. Will there be on-site accommodations?

A. No. Preferred hotel accommodations include Holiday Inn Express which is the closest hotel to the Sanctuary and offers special rates to our guests or Vero Beach Hotel & Spa.
