Race Information

Our race starts and finishes at St. Lucie County Fairgrounds on Florida’s Treasure Coast where friends and family can cheer you on. After leaving the fairgrounds, you’ll use circular ramps to access an aerial sidewalk, travel down a country road and run or walk a 1-1/2 mile lap through Save the Chimps, the world’s largest Sanctuary for rescued chimpanzees.

Race Central

Event takes place at St. Lucie County Fairgrounds

The fairgrounds will be open to the public from 5:30 am – 12:00 pm on race day.

There is a parking fee of $4.00 for participants and spectators.

Volunteers will not be charged as long as they are able to display a pass indicating that they are volunteering for the event.

All parking will be directed towards the A&B lots at the fairgrounds.

Packet Pick-up

To avoid delays on race day, you may pick up your packet on April 14th at Runner’s Depot of Vero Beach. Sign-in and photo id required. If you will be picking up a packet for another runner you must bring a photo copy of their id and they must have hand-signed the photo copy.

Strollers, roller skates, roller blades, skateboards, scooters, baby joggers, and bicycles are not allowed on the course during Chimpathon due to uneven terrain. We ask that racers not wear earphones or anything that would interfere with their ability to hear while running/walking through Save the Chimps.


For safety reasons, no animals can be allowed on the race course or in the Save the Chimps Sanctuary, including service animals.

Completion Time

Chimpathon welcomes runners, joggers, and walkers. As a practical matter, street right-of-ways, sheriff deputies, and other support cannot be extended beyond 11 am – anyone still on the course after such time may continue walking along the side of the road or may request a ride back to the finish line.

*All runners and walkers must have completed their lap at the at the Sanctuary by 9:30 am

Gear Check

We’ll safely watch your change of clothes, car keys, cell phone or other valuables while you race. Gear check will be staffed from 6 am – 12:00 pm on Race Day.

Race Start

Race start and finish lines are managed by Runner’s Depot of Vero Beach. There will be a single gun start at 7:30 am. Pacers for both runners and walkers will be available at no charge to help you meet your personal goals.


Chronotrack disposable tags will be used for timing. Racers must fasten their bibs securely to the front of their shirts or pants so the race number is clearly visible. Unless we can see your bib and race number, you will not be allowed to enter Save the Chimps sanctuary.

The Sanctuary

During the lap through Save the Chimps, racers must:

  • Stay on the marked course at all times
  • Continue walking or running
  • Refrain from making loud noises
  • Follow any instructions given by Sanctuary staff or Chimpathon volunteers

Racers will not be permitted to come into contact with any chimpanzee or to get close to any enclosure, fence, or gate.

The Sanctuary is in a rural setting; wildlife, including alligators and venomous reptiles may be encountered on Sanctuary grounds. Wildlife may not be approached, handled, or fed.

Golf carts and other motorized vehicles are used by caregivers on Sanctuary grounds. Although every effort will be made to limit the use of vehicles during the race, we ask that race participants keep to the right side of the road while in the sanctuary.

For your safety and for the well-being of our chimpanzees, racers may be denied access to any portion of the Sanctuary or asked to leave the sanctuary for any reason.

First Aid

Medics from the Shinn Road Fire Station will be standing by at the Fairgrounds. If anyone is in need of medical aid please notify any volunteer. Volunteers will be wearing orange “Chimpathon” or “Save the Chimps” t-shirts.

Hydration and Comfort Stations

Hydration stations will be available at every mile along the course as well as at the finish line. Water will be available at every hydration station. Electrolyte replacement beverages will be available at some stations. Comfort stations with portable toilets will be located along the course.

Finish zone

Once racers cross the Finish Line, they will be awarded their finisher’s medal. Hydration, comfort stations, and a post-race snack will be waiting for the finishers.

Race Day Photos

Race Day photos will be taken at the start, finish, and along the course, so please make sure that your race number is visible throughout the race to help identify you for photographs.

Save the Chimps’ photographer will be at the sanctuary to capture moments from the race. Photo will be shared on Save the Chimps’ website and social media pages.

Contingency Plan/Event Cancellation

In the event unusual conditions necessitate the curtailment, postponement or cancellation of the event for the safety of participants, the Race Director shall have absolute authority to make changes in order to best serve the interests and safety of the participants of the event. In case of extreme weather, the race director shall determine if and when the event shall cease, resume or be cancelled.

No refunds will be issued if the event is cancelled.
