Roger and Deborah Fouts Visit the Sanctuary

Roger and Debbi Fouts are the directors of the Institute for Chimpanzee and Human Communication. Their over 30 years of experience communicating with chimpanzees using American Sign Language shows that chimpanzees share with us yet another of what was previously considered to be a uniquely human trait - they use language.

The Foutses, who serve on the Sanctuary's board of directors, have been advisors on all aspects of this project since the beginning. In early February they came to Florida and visited the Sanctuary for the first time. Read about their visit in our news section - Experts Praise New Chimp Habitat.

An evening reception for Roger and Debbi was held at the Sanctuary. With over a hundred people in attendance, Carole Noon introduced the Foutses and thanked them for their invaluable help and support in the creation of the Sanctuary. The Foutses shared a video showing their extended family of five signing chimpanzees and their impressive facility at Central Washington University. A book signing of NEXT OF KIN, the unique tale of how communicating with chimpanzees changed Roger and Debbi's lives and the larger scientific realm forever, followed the reception.

The Foutses' 30 years of work shows that the relationship of the human primate to our closest relative is complex and characterized by more commonalties than most humans realize. By bridging the gap between our species they remind us of the great debt we owe our often inhumanely treated 'next of kin.'

Thank you Roger and Debbi.
