'Save the Chimps' Buys Land
Ft. Pierce lies twelve miles east of the Sanctuary property. This South Florida coastal town is home of the internationally recognized Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, three college campuses - Indian River Community College and extensions of both Florida Atlantic University and the University of Florida, and a marine field site of the Smithsonian Institute.
The SANCTUARY SITE suits the needs of chimpanzees and humans alike - convenient to Ft. Pierce for students and staff; rural and private for chimpanzee residents. A combination of scrub, citrus trees, and clearings, the 150 acres will permit expansion for many more than the Air Force chimpanzees, the first Sanctuary inhabitants.
The MODULAR DESIGN for indoor housing also permits easy expansion. An Introduction Building will provide visual and limited physical contact for chimpanzees who are strangers and small unfamiliar groups. The behavior of chimpanzees in adjacent cages will determine the timing of full introductions. After compatible families have been formed the chimpanzees will be transferred to the Group Housing.
An OUTDOOR ENCLOSURE will enlarge the living space of both buildings. The Introduction Building will include several small outdoor areas to gradually prepare laboratory chimpanzees for a life spent largely outside in the tropical climate. Each Group Housing unit will open to a much larger outdoor area. These will provide opportunities for climbing, swinging, privacy, and a variety of enrichment activities.
