Don't be a Chump; Give to the Chimps
Group trying to save chimpanzees used in NASA testing

If peace on Earth and goodwill toward men seems a tall order during this most partisan of holiday seasons, perhaps you can at least see it in your heart to save a chimp.

Save the Chimps, headquartered in Boynton Beach, is selling Christmas cards this month to support efforts to build a sanctuary in St. Lucie County.

The cards feature a mischevious chimp wearing a Santa's cap and surrounded by a string of Christmas lights. A bundle of 10 costs $15.

So far, the group has sold about 500 of the cards. It can use the money. By February, it hopes to open a 150-acre chimpanzee sanctuary west of Interstate 95 near Fort Pierce. The organization is completing its first building on the site and expects 21 chimps to be delivered by the end of January.

The chimps are coming from Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico and have been used for a variety of NASA's scientific tests.

"These guys have been through a lot," said Karen Schneider, director of development for Save the Chimps.

The time of the chimps' arrival is fitting. Jan. 3 will mark the 40th anniversary of the first trip to space for a chimp. "Ham" left Cape Canaveral aboard a Redstone rocket and helped prove man could survive in space.
