The world recently got a look at one of the unique assets on the Treasure Coast.
In December, the decade-long "Great Chimpanzee Migration" concluded as the last 10 of 266 chimps were relocated from a former research lab in Alamogordo, N.M., to the 150-acre Save the Chimps sanctuary in western St. Lucie County.
On April 18, members from the Saint Lucie River Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution visited the Chimpanzee Center near Fort Pierce, bringing donations of fruits, vegetables, peanut butter and other treats.
Florida is well known for its retirement communities, often catering to residents with similar lifestyles and interests. There’s a community in Fort Pierce that provides accommodations to a special kind of retiree: chimpanzees.
A great big pant hoot thank you goes out to the employees of Home Depot in Fort Pierce, Florida who devoted their time to volunteer at Save the Chimp and paint the outside of Ron’s building.
Fresh delicious fruits and vegetables are the main source of the chimps’ diet but like us, the chimps love the occasional peanut butter and jelly sandwich!
The two part story on Bart and the last 10 chimps to make the journey to Florida will air on Saturday night, EARTH DAY, April 22nd 8pm and 11pm ET on CNN.
