Monkey Kingdom is an upcoming 2015 nature documentary film by Disneynature with a release date of April 17, 2015. The film tells the story of a family of monkeys living in ancient ruins founded in the jungles of Polonnaruwa in Sri Lanka.

How much do you know about your fellow primates?

Primates is the order of mammals that includes a wide range of species, most commonly known are monkeys and apes. Sometimes we forget that we humans are included as well!

Here is a glossary of terms to help you learn more:

Toque Macaques: is a species of monkey that lives in Sri Lanka.

Primatologist: a person who studies primates (a group of mammals that includes prosimians, monkeys, and apes)

Hierarchy: a social ranking of individuals where some are higher or lower than others.

Alpha: the highest ranking individual in a primate group

Endangered species: animals and plant species threatened with extinction

What are some similarities between the Toque Macaques and Chimpanzees?

1. Both species are endangered species.

2. Both live in similar family units with a hierarchy lead by an alpha male.

3. Both spend their days foraging for food.

4. Both live in a tropical rain forest climate.

5. Both types of primates are threatened by loss of land.

6. Both types of primates have been mistreated in the pet trade.
